Empowering Change: A Vision for Resilient Electrification Equity in Berkeley

We are thrilled to share with you an impactful initiative spearheaded by Rebuilding Together East Bay North in partnership with the City of Berkeley– the "Just Transition Pilot." This visionary project is poised to enhance the quality of homes in Berkeley, focusing on affordability, environmental sustainability, and social equity.

The Strategic Approach

At the core of our endeavor is a commitment to making residences in Berkeley more comfortable and healthier, especially for those facing financial challenges. Our strategy involves a transition from conventional gas-powered systems to clean electricity, a move that not only improves living conditions but also contributes to a greener, healthier environment.

Strategic Goals

Our immediate goal is to implement these electrification upgrades in approximately 40 to 60 homes, prioritizing low-to-moderate income households. Simultaneously, we aim to create employment opportunities, particularly for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), as well as women. By doing so, we envision not only transforming homes but also uplifting communities through economic empowerment.

Environmental Impact

Beyond the walls of these homes, our project is set to combat climate change actively. The transition from gas appliances to clean electricity is projected to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions by a substantial 30,496 to 50,744 kilograms annually. This, in essence, is a tangible step towards a more sustainable future.

Community Engagement

The "Just Transition Pilot" is not merely a construction project; it is a community-building initiative. Our engagement strategies target both underrepresented contractors and low-income homeowners. Through recruitment, training programs, and education initiatives, we aim to empower local residents with the knowledge and confidence to embrace the benefits of electrification measures.

Scaling Impact

While our focus is currently on Berkeley, we aspire for this project to serve as a replicable model for other jurisdictions. By collaborating with existing organizations, trade associations, government agencies, and contractors, we aim to share best practices, methodologies, and the quantifiable benefits experienced by low-to-moderate income community members.

Your Support Matters

As we embark on this transformative journey, we invite you to join hands with us in realizing this vision. Your support will not only contribute to the success of the "Just Transition Pilot" but will also make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and families in Berkeley. Together, let us build a future where sustainability, affordability, and inclusivity are at the forefront of community development.
